A white Grand Rapids, Michigan police officer claims he chased, straddled, and killed unarmed Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old father of two small children, during a struggle stemming from a traffic stop. But Patrick was shot at point-blank range in the back of the head and there was no other injury on Lyoya’s body other than the fatal gunshot wound.
Although repeatedly asked for the name of the officer involved, the Grand Rapids Police Department have not publicly named the officer captured on video during the incident.
The Lyoya death sparked the usual calls for reforms, transparency, civilian oversight, training, discipline, etc. But, as usual, missing from the discussion are the psycho-social and economic dynamics that drive the longstanding pattern of killing those Africans summarily found guilty of the crime of “contempt of cop.” Law enforcement administrators can do everything to change policies and rules, but until they disable the personal, internal engines that drive the cops’ violent racism, the killings will continue.
