DeAndre Johnson was killed by DC police officers who were serving a temporary protection order. Johnson was shot twice in the back.

On Monday, October 17, 2021 just after 4:30 p.m., seven DC officers went to the apartment in Congress Heights to serve the order & concluded that an arrest should be made over the reported assault. DC police claim Johnson “became aggravated,” and that DC officers “tried” to de-escalate the situation.

DC police claim that “One of the officers began to place Mr. Johnson in handcuffs,” and “Mr. Johnson resisted, resulting in an intense physical struggle.” DC police claim that Johnson grabbed one officer’s gun. Shots were fired.

Due to that struggle, DC police claim, officers’ body-worn camera were deactivated and then reactivated. The camera angle does not clearly capture all aspects of the struggle.

Candlelight Vigil for Deandre

On Monday October 18, 2021, DeAndre Johnson lost his life at the hands of the Metropolitan Police Department in Southeast Washington, DC.

We light candles to remember, honor, connect and grieve together.

“If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

Malcolm X

DeAndre was so much more than the narrative that has been released reflects. He was a loving father and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. That moment does not define DeAndre or in any way diminish his unquestionable humanity.

It is in that grounding that the family would like to invite the community to gather together and honor the life of DeAndre. This is a loss to a family, to loved ones and to an entire community.

In the midst of these trying and unpredictable times now is the time to begin building connections between each other. This is true especially when it is the most difficult.

Please wear a mask as all COVID protocols will be followed.
